Photojournalist Ranjith Kally (1925-2017) was born in Isipingo, a descendant of indentured labourers. He left school at the age of 14 to work at a shoe factory in Durban to supplement his family’s income. When he was 21, he bought a Kodak Postcard camera at a jumble sale and was soon photographing social events on weekends. Later he joined Golden City Post and Drum magazine, where he worked from 1956-1965 and again from 1968-1985.
