Denis Hirson was born in the UK in 1951 and lived in South Africa until the age of 22. He settled in France in 1975, and has worked as an actor and lecturer in English at the École Polytechnique. His publications include the memoirs The House Next Door to Africa and I Remember King Kong (The Boxer), and Footnotes of the Panther, conversations between William Kentridge and Denis Hirson. He edited the collections In the Heat of Shadows, South African poetry, 1996-2013; Lava of This Land, South African poetry, 1960-1996, and The Heinemann Book of South African Short Stories.
