In this study Georgio Miescher describes how a temporary cartographic line created by the German colonial authorities in 1897 as a defence line against rinderpest evolved into a 1 250 km two metre-high continuous fence to separate northern Namibia from the rest of the country, used by South African colonial authorities to control labor migration and separate white commercial farming areas from black communal lands.

Georgio Miescher is Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the Centre for African Studies in Basel and Associated Research Fellow of the University of Namibia.
