In it he describes growing up in poverty, sleeping on the streets, the search for dignity in a world of alcohol, drugs and crime, the older brother who took care of him as a toddler, and the dream of education that kept him going.

Lutz van Dijk was born in 1955 in Berlin and lives in Cape Town, where he is a co-founder of HOKISA (Homes for Kids in South Africa). A teacher by profession, his books include A History of Africa, Stronger than the Storm: Romeo and Jabulile and Themba - A boy called Hope.
