A tribute to Afrikaans poet, playwright and scholar NP van Wyk Louw (1906-1970). One of the Dertigers, he was awarded the Hertzog Prize five times, for his poetry collections Alleenspraak (1937), Die halwe kring (1940) and Tristia (1965), for the verse drama Germanicus (1960), and for his collections of critical prose and essays, Die mens agter die boek, Maskers van die erns, Lojale verset and Berigte te velde (1958). He was head of the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of the Witwatersrand from 1958 until his death.
