Shortly after passing the gruelling SADF's Special Forces selection course in the early 1980s, Koos Stadler joined the Small Teams group at 5 Reconnaissance Regiment. This sub-unit was made up of two-man teams and was responsible for numerous secret and dangerous missions behind enemy lines during the Border War. He was a Small Team operator specialising in reconnaissance for 10 years of his 24 years with Special Forces.
