Sociologist, novelist, poet, playwright and cultural activist Ari Sitas was born in 1952 in Cyprus. A founder member of the Junction Avenue Theatre Company, he won the 1978 Olive Schreiner Award for his play, "Randlords and Rotgut". His previous collections of poetry include "Tropical Scars" (1989), "Slave Trades" (2000) and "The RDP Poems" (2004). He is currently a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town.
