In 2013 four San elders from the Kalahari were invited to Museum Africa in Johannesburg to examine artifacts collected by Dr Louis Fourie at the beginning of the 20th century. They provided the correct traditional names and explained how the items were made, who used them, and for what purpose.

Lucinda Backwell is a researcher in the Instituto Superior de Estudios Sociales, Tucumán, Argentina, and an honorary researcher in the Evolutionary Studies Institute and DSI/NRF Centre of Excellence in Palaeosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Francesco d’Errico is Research Director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, University of Bordeaux, France, and Professor at the Centre for Early Sapiens Behaviour, University of Bergen, Norway.
