"The Black Christ" was painted by Ronald Harrison. Chief Albert Luthuli's face was the model for Christ and the two centurions were modelled on John Vorster and Hendrik Verwoerd. The painting was unveiled in 1962, then hidden and taken abroad. The artist was tortured and imprisoned. The painting was returned to South Africa in 1997
