Soon after the British occupation of the Cape in 1795 Simon's Bay and the village of Simon's Town began to develop as a major naval port for the British Navy. This development began in the Simon's Town West Dockyard, where the Dutch VOC had built their first storehouses. The West Dockyard was the main base of the Royal Navy until the completion of the East Dockyard in 1910.
