A chronological collection of essays by the late theologian and philosopher Augustine Shutte, written over a period of fifty years.

In a concluding chapter editor Patrick Giddy reflects on Shutte's theological development, drawing on unpublished notebook entries and on his religious poetry.

Augustine Shutte taught philosophy at the University of Cape Town from 1972 until his death in 2016. He was a member of the Dominican Order of Preachers and at various times served as Cape Town convenor of the Dominican Family, as chair the Catholic Theology Society of South Africa and of the UCT Philosophy Society, and as a priest in the Roman Catholic Women’s Priest Movement. He was also active in the reform movement We Are All Church South Africa. His books include The Mystery of Humanity (1993), Philosophy for Africa (1993),  Ubuntu: An ethic for a new South Africa (2001) and The Quest for Humanity in Science and Religion: the South Africa experience (2005).
