The region of Ngqushwa was formely known as the Ciskei, a 'homeland' for the Xhosa people created by the apartheid government.

Thembela Ngcayi was born in 1995 in Emazizini in Upper Gwalana location, in the district of King Williams' Town, the capital of what is now Ngqushwa.
