Richard Mendelsohn grew up in Parow in the 1950s and 1960s. Now retired, he is a former Head of the Department of Historical Studies and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Cape Town.  He is the author of Sammy Marks: The uncrowned king of the Transvaal; co-editor of Memories, Realities and Dreams: aspects of South African Jewish experience; and co-author (with Milton Shain) of The Jews in South Africa: An illustrated history.
