Richard Mendelsohn on the rise and decline of a small Jewish community in the Cape Town suburb of Parow over the course of the 20th century.

Richard Mendelsohn grew up in Parow in the 1950s and 1960s. Now retired, he is a former Head of the Department of Historical Studies and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Cape Town.  He is the author of Sammy Marks: The uncrowned king of the Transvaal; co-editor of Memories, Realities and Dreams: aspects of South African Jewish experience; and co-author (with Milton Shain) of The Jews in South Africa: An illustrated history.
