This publication reports on the main findings of a three-and-a-half-year international project on Young Scientists in Africa. It provides background on the state of science in Africa,  a profile of young scientists and the obstacles they face in their careers, and recommendations on changes to current research systems in Africa.

Catherine Beaudry is Professor at the Mathematics and Industrial Engineering Department of École Polytechnique de Montréal where she holds a Tier I Canada Research Chair on the Creation, development and commercialisation of innovation.

Professor Johann Mouton is Director of the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology at Stellenbosch University and the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Scientometrics and STI Policy.

Heidi Prozesky is a research manager at  the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Scientometrics and STI Policy.
