Practical joker Horace de Vere Cole (1881-1936) was the man behind the infamous 1910 Dreadnought hoax - pretending to be an Abyssinian prince with his entourage, he was given a tour of the Royal Navy ship HMS Dreadnought.
During the Boer War Cole was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Yorkshire Hussars. Wounded in July 1900 he recuperated at the Red Cross hospital in Kroonstad, before being invalided out of the army.
