The Unemployed Workers Movement arose in 1984. This book covers the period 1980-1994.

Shaheed Mahomed participated in the Unemployed Workers Movement and the Western Cape Unemployed Workers Union from 1984 to 1993. He left to become an organiser at the Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union. He was a member of the Regional Executive Committee of the Congress of South African Trade Unions Western Cape from 1987 to 1992, and a member of the Trotskyist Revolutionaries, which became part of the Workers International to rebuild the Fourth International. The majority of the South African section broke away in 1995 to form the Workers International Vanguard League.
