Ilse van Staden's first collection of poems, Watervlerk (2003), was awarded the Eugène Marais Prize and the Ingrid Jonker Prize. She is the author of three more volumes of poetry, Fluisterklip, Die dood is 'n mooi blou blom and Tafel vir twee, as well as the novels Goeie dood wat saggies byt and Palimpses. She now lives in Australia, where she works as a vet.
